Life Coaching

What it is, how it works, and why it matters.

Three things worth understanding before we begin. What coaching actually is, what happens inside a session, and what changes when you have the right partner beside you.

01

What a life coach actually is (and isn't)

"So you give advice for a living?" It's the most common thing people assume about coaching. And it's the opposite of what I actually do.

A consultant hands you answers. A mentor passes down their experience. A therapist helps heal the past. All of them are useful. None of them are coaching.

ICF coaching starts from a different belief. That you already hold your own answers. My job isn't to give you mine. It's to ask the questions that surface yours.

A good coach evokes awareness, unlocks new perspectives, and supports you in generating your own insights.

So what does that actually look like? Here is what coaching is, and what it isn't.

Coaching is

  • Client-ledYou set the agenda, choose the goals, and own every decision. The direction is always yours.
  • Forward-lookingWe work with where you are and where you're going, not a post-mortem of the past.
  • ExploratoryI listen, I ask, and the insight becomes yours.
  • EmpoweringThe aim is your self-reliance, not your dependence on me.

Coaching is not

  • TherapyTherapy heals the past. Coaching builds the future for those already well.
  • ConsultingA consultant hands you the answer. I help you reach your own.
  • MentoringA mentor passes down their path. Coaching trusts you to find yours.
  • TeachingA teacher follows a curriculum. Coaching follows you.

Are you ready to take the first step to a better life, now that you know what coaching is?

The power of having a life coach

I didn't come to coaching through a business decision. The honest answer began at home.

Growing up, I never felt heard, guided, or supported. And one day I saw those same gaps in how I was fathering. The thing I lacked, I was quietly passing on.

I wanted to change that. Not with a quick answer, but by learning to actually listen. Acquiring the coaching skillset gave me that and more. I've learned not to pass judgement, make assumptions, or hand out prescriptions. It changed how I show up. As a father first, and eventually as a coach.

Through my practice, I've realised anyone can benefit from a life coach. Feeling stuck? Unsure about a change? Finding it hard to see things clearly? These are exactly the conditions where coaching creates the most movement.

The research reflects this. According to the International Coaching Federation:

80%
of coaching clients report increased self-confidence
75%
saw improved relationships and communication
95%
reported doing things differently as a result of coaching

But numbers only tell part of the story. What they can't capture is the quiet shift that happens when someone finally feels heard. When a question lands just right, and something you've carried for years suddenly comes clear.

That's what I'm here for. To listen, guide, and support you on this journey of life. Not to hand you the answer, but to help you find your own.

03

How a coaching session works

One of the most common things I hear before a first session is: "I'm not sure what I'd even talk about." That's completely fine. Not knowing is a perfectly good place to start.

If you arrive unsure, we begin with discovery. We talk about your values, the things you hold dear, your aspirations and ideals. This becomes the foundation everything else is built on.

From there, every session follows a simple structure. You begin by naming what you want to walk away with. A goal that matters to you right now. We explore it together. And by the end, you will have gained a new insight or some learning on that goal. Every single time.

Step 01

Set the Session Goal

You name what you want to walk away with.

Step 02

Explore & Evoke Awareness

Through active listening and powerful questions.

Step 03

Insight & Learning

You leave with a new insight, every time.

Step 04

Action & Accountability

A forward step to carry into your life.

Sessions run 45 minutes to an hour. There's almost always more to explore than one conversation allows, which is why I recommend starting with three. If more would serve you, we build a cadence around your journey from there.

The structure of the coaching session is mine to hold, but the direction of the conversation is always yours.

You don't need to arrive prepared. You don't need to have it figured out. You just need to show up.

Wheel of Life

The Wheel of Life is a simple way to see what is important to your life right now and where you are at on a scale of 1 to 10. It may change from time to time, and that is okay. Start with the example below, then build your own. List the areas that matter to your current season of life, rate each one, and a shape will form. There are no right answers. Just an honest starting point.

For example

A wide, even shape suggests balance. The dents show where attention might be needed.

Now build your own

Add at least three areas to see your wheel take shape.

Which area feels furthest from where you want it to be? That is often where a coaching conversation begins.

Values Exercise

Your values are the compass for the direction you set. This is a quick, timed exercise, so work fast and trust your gut. There are no right answers, and what feels important may change from season to season. That is okay. Just be as honest as you can about what matters to you now.

Three quick rounds. Don't overthink it. When the timer runs out, the round ends on its own.
  1. Round 1  choose your top 20  (60 seconds)
  2. Round 2  let go of 10, keeping 10  (30 seconds)
  3. Round 3  narrow to your 5 core values  (15 seconds)

When you have your five, ask yourself: is the way I am living today in line with these?

The first session is about understanding where you are and where you want to go. No agenda required. Just a willingness to explore.
