What mentoring is (and isn't)
If coaching draws the answer out of you, what does mentoring do?
Mentoring shares the map. It is guidance from someone who has already walked a road you are about to walk. Where coaching trusts that you hold the answer, mentoring offers you mine, earned the hard way, for you to take or leave.
The two are not the same, and neither is better. They simply do different work.
Coaching asks what you think. Mentoring shares what I found. The deepest growth often needs both.
Mentoring is
- Experience-ledGrounded in roads I have actually walked, not theory.
- DirectionalI share what worked, what failed, and what I would do again.
- PracticalWe work on real situations, decisions, and next steps.
- Yours to useTake what serves you. Leave what does not. It is still your path.
Mentoring is not
- CoachingCoaching is question-led and trusts your own answers. Mentoring adds mine.
- ConsultingA consultant does it for you. I help you do it yourself, faster.
- TeachingNo curriculum. We start from where you are.
- A shortcutI can save you time, not the effort.
So the question is not coaching or mentoring. It is which one you need right now, and often it is both.
